It’s all about varying the scale(size of the patterns)....even the granite has a smaller pattern. The repeated black square motif has varied sizes. This is in my kitchen. My floor tiles are 12” square. That too counts as a pattern in the room.
When I was in Interior Design school, one of my favorite design teachers brought 13 fabric selections to class. All fabrics were in the same color ways, but each one of them had a different size pattenr. Big, medium, small, florals, dots, plaids, etc. Some were tiny little dots going up to a floral huge pattern. There was even a solid fabric with no pattern at all.
It is is very gratifying to see all these patterns actually meld together into a complete overall design element. Give it a try.
